How to Choose Sunglasses for your Face Shape

There are plenty of guides out there telling you how to choose the perfect sunglasses or prescription glasses for a particular face shape, but sometimes the hardest thing is deciding what face shape you have.

The best way is to use the skills of a good image consultant, but failing that it is about determining what is the widest part of your face in relation to the other parts and the height, along with the profile of your chin.  Another way is to trace your face in the mirror with a lipstick and to then assess the general shape.

Generally there are five main face shapes, here is the lowdown:

 ROUND

A round face is pretty self explanatory, it is circular without a lot of length, so less horse-like and more well circular.

The best glasses to "thin" the face are those with angular shapes ie. Go for the opposite of what your face is, so no round John Lennon type glasses, these Jezebelle sunnies by Roc are perfect.  Celebrities with a round face include Julia Stiles, Keri Russell and Kirsten Dunst.

HEART

The giveaway for a heart shaped face is the heart shaped chin, coupled with a large forehead and often strong cheekbones.

This face shape can wear both round and angular shaped glasses, but beware of glasses that are wider at the top than at the bottom - go for the opposite of what shape your face is, although glasses with detail at the bottom and less at the top are difficult to find. Rimless glasses are also recommended for heart shaped faces.Celebrities with a heart shaped face include Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Christina Ricci, Helen Mirren and Marilyn Monroe.  Frankie Sunnies by Roc Eyewear.

SQUARE

A strong square jaw with a wide forehead and often a wide jawline. With a square face avoid square angular glasses and go for rounded glasses. Celebrities with a square face include Gwyneth Paltrow, Minnie Driver and Kyra Sedgwick.  Archie sunnies by Roc Eyewear.

LONG

A long face is longer than it is wide and often also has a longer nose. If you have a long face then look out for glasses with a wider frame as generally a long face will look narrow so it is wise to counter this. Best to go for rounder frames as the long face is generally angular. Celebrities with a long face include Liv Tyler, Jennifer Love-Hewit and Sarah Jessica Parker.  Maxi Sunnies by Roc.

OVAL

Regarded as the perfect shaped face, because it is well balanced. An oval face pretty much gives you carte blanche on what shape glasses you want to wear, but keep in mind other factors such as your age and colouring. Celebrities with an oval shaped face include Amanda Peet, Charlize Theron (slightly heart shaped chin) and Tyra Banks.

OTHER FACTORS TO CONSIDER

Along with face shape you need to consider your age, your colouring and your overall general size when choosing sunnies. Nicole Ritchie and the Olsen twins wear oversized glasses in contrast to their diminutive size, which definitely makes a statement, but unless you are challenging the fashion status quo then as a rule compliment what size you are.
